An interview with @thisismissem from @APC: FediMod FIRES on building better and decentralised social media applications (by @XavCC).
Probably the biggest thing that I’ve learned over the years of the Fediverse is that it depends almost entirely on volunteer labour. There are a few people that are paid full time to work on the Fediverse. But to actually get the things that you need, it very much largely depends on volunteer labour, because projects are either chasing funding through grants or they're chasing funding through their nations. And those demands can often be at odds with what people overall need or want.
So that's probably the biggest learning from the Fediverse that I have: a lot of it is just run and funded by individuals and volunteers, which often means that it doesn't move as fast as more commercial operations.
i'm pivoting to AI (Artificial Incompetence)
in case you need a taste of how fucked the tech industry is right now, I'm being required to use AI at work. if I talk about how it fucks up or overcomplicates basic asks, it's because I "don't know how to use it" which indicates a "lack of growth mindset", and thus poor performance. I've been told this directly to my face, starting immediately.
so not only must I use Claude, I have to cover for Claude's mistakes, and then go the extra mile to pass off my own work as Claude's.
Could it be the reason young men are having so much trouble dating is that they all have mustaches

Serious offer: i know how to make electric bicycles, electrify analog bicycles and repair broken electric bikes/scooters. If you are in #Brisbane, feeling fuel pinch, and want to get (back/newly) on two wheels, hit me up. Parts to electrify a bicycle cost a few hundred dollars, no need to spend $4000 on a store bike if you don’t want to. I even have some analog bikes we could use for parts. If you have access to ex rental scooters from defunct rental companies, i can also help resurrect these.
Will hold a weekend #ebike #escooter #micromobility workshop if there is interest.
ETA: if not in brissy i can recommend parts to buy
ETFA: if you have a good bike but a dead battery, this can be resurrected for around $100
ETEFA: your replies tell me I'd better pump out a blog post on this subject pronto.

A lot of American analysts shaped by how US strategic debates of the 1990s and 2000s revolved around specifically defined though often wildly unrealistic goals are struggling to adapt to a world where US war strategy boils down to smash shit up until it breaks forever and then go home

It has ALWAYS been that Black + Brown ppl are disproportionately harmed by abortion bans
+ now they are ofc not only harmed most in every way
incl disproportionate maternal death and infant mortality rates
to say nothing of criminalization + ICE.

I have a question kinda on topic, did you do a thread on Twitter, years ago, about how all men are responsible for abortions?
The etymologicon
a circular stroll through the hidden connections of the English language
Springing from writer and journalist Mark Forsyth's hugely popular blog The Inky Fool and including word-connection parlour games perfect for any word-lovers get-together, The Etymologicon is a brilliant map of the secret labyrinth that lurks beneath the English language. There's always a connection. Sometimes, it's obvious: an actor's role was once written on a roll of parchment, and cappuccinos are the same color as the robes of a Capuchin monk. Sometimes the connection is astonishing and a little more hidden: who would have guessed that your pants and panties are named after Saint Pantaleon, the all-compassionate?

ICYMI, I've been quietly reviving Known, renamed it to Idno (its original name), and set it up so it both posts to ActivityPub and syncs to a PDS via standard.site. Not production-ready but super fun. My test instance (with very WIP design) is at https://idno.werd.io.
oo, will you be releasing it for general use? i was rather fond of Known, and i'm not enjoying net use much anymore.
