Raymond Aron y prend vivement à partie les intellectuels compagnons de route du parti communiste, notamment Sartre et le groupe des Temps modernes, et analyse les raisons de leur aveuglement. Il montre comment la volonté de croire en un avenir enchanté peut conduire à refuser de voir la réalité d’un système qui piétine la liberté et la dignité humaines. Ce message peut continuer à nourrir une éthique intellectuelle telle que la définit les dernières lignes du livre : « Si la tolérance naît du doute, qu’on enseigne à douter des modèles et des utopies, à récuser les prophètes de salut, les annonciateurs de catastrophes. Appelons de nos vœux la venue des sceptiques s’ils doivent éteindre le fanatisme. »
Philosophe, Raymond Aron (1905-1983) a été professeur de sociologie à la Sorbonne, tout en continuant une activité de journaliste commencée pendant la guerre à La France Libre. Il a été élu au Collège de France en 1970. Il est notamment l’auteur, dans la collection « Pluriel », de Essai sur les libertés. Nicolas Baverez, avocat, est l’auteur notamment de Raymond Aron : un moraliste au temps des idéologies (Flammarion).
