apparently this is both a combination of data centres using a fuckton of copper for all the wiring and cooling but also the tariffs on raw materials finally catching up to the supply chain
god, want to say things couldn't be more fucked, but oh boy, they will be
at least they're less fucked outside of the USA?
@alienghic unfortunately, no
we saw this on Gamer's Nexus, who referenced it from a German supplier they know who were facing difficulty due to the increased copper prices
that's why it's been almost a year for this to fully solidify; the effects of Americans, who manufacture many things with copper, having to pay more on copper, has had ripple effects on the entire supply chain that took a while to really nosedive
@alienghic I mean, it's less that it can't be replaced, and more that it hasn't been
like, for example, computer parts made with copper are technically from american companies, and so even if the copper is sourced from outside the US, manufactured into stuff outside the US, and ultimately sold to a place outside the US, it's still subject to the tariffs
and since these companies are the ones taking up all the semiconductor manufacturing capacity it makes sense they're also taking up the copper capacity, and the change in supply/demand is being felt everywhere
and in this case, a German hardware manufacturer just wanting to buy copper without any involvement from the US gets to feel the US messing with copper prices
