Current mood: that thing where you get into reading a web novel and realize you're making very slow progress (only 30% of the way through it) so do a download and pipe it through lynx -dump |wc -w and discover it's three times as long as War and Peace

@cstross So web novels are the modern Victorian serial novel?
@cstross A month ago I read Dungeon Crawler Carl. It was fun, interesting, and read well. Then I saw there were six more books, all progressively longer…
…oh and just as I dug into Book 7, the eighth book was published. On the upside the trend of ever increasing page counts in the series seems to have paused with it.
@cstross natural outcome of monthly subscribers.
@cstross I imagine this is how people feel when I send them the world’s longest joke.
@cstross yeah I picked up a copy of "The Making of Americans" browsing this morning and pondered if I'd survive to the end.
@cstross The Wandering Inn?
@cstross Which one? (not that my backlog isn't full enough already)
@jernej__s "A Journey of Black and Red" by Alex Gilbert (who also wrote "The Calamitous Bob"). You can find it on Royal Road for now.
@[email protected] @[email protected] I can second it being great fun in its own slightly campy way and, erm, quite long.
@cstross @jernej__s It’s on Amazon as well, as an 11 book series, which loves up with your word count 🙂
@cstross Ah, finished both of these (and Changeling).
@cstross : had a similar experience with (the excellent) Harry Potter and the method of rationnality
@cstross I need a program that takes an .epub and tells you how thick the paperback would be
@GinevraCat @roomaroo Get word count, assume 330 words/page? Works for me, +/- 10%.
@cstross Pls to share link to webnovel. Thx.
