For four years between 2022 April 26 ( https://mastodon.social/@mcc/108199886340178151 ) and 2026 April 26 ( https://mastodon.social/@mcc/116472563618024737 ) I posted a music recommendation basically every day here in a gratuitously long thread I split every time it started to break the server. Due to a mix of exhaustion and four years being a nice round number, I decided to stop there. So the music thread is over, and it is not coming back. I am done with it. Anyway here's some music recommendations

What I'm listening to today: "Just Abandoned My Self", Boris

Boris gets it. Brian Eno once said that heavy metal and ambient are adjacent genres because both are about "bathing yourself in sound". Boris really, really gets this. Have you ever heard a song so good you wished it could just go on forever? What if it could? What if it did?

What I'm listening to today: "space jam"

YouTube has this incredible wealth of people performing little improvised electronic sets pieces in bedrooms and on kitchen tables with whatever equipment they have and this has honestly been most of my music diet the last few years. A lot of these pieces have like 20 views yet are breathtaking. This is a 30-minute(!) ambient piece that starts as repetitive humming tones but finds a captivating hypnotic groove like… 12 minutes in

What I'm listening to today: "Fuck Off Money", Mogwai (Alessandro Cortini rework)

The kings of a certain era of post-rock remixed by the guy who produced the synths on With Teeth in the 00s and triggered a Buchla revival in the 10s. This was released around the time Cortini started designing commercial synthesizers with Make Noise and I kinda suspect I hear the Strega in the mix here.

Smooth, calm, quirky, this song was the most comforting thing in my life in 2021-2022

What I'm listening to today: "Hyper Yellow Thrash", POWER OF IDEA

A real gem of a borderline punk/metal album from 1997 (I'm sure if I knew less about techno and more about punk I could place a microgenre exactly). Two very nice ladies scream through 27 minutes of songs with names like "PUNK RACISM" and "WHO IS CAPITALIST?". If that's too many minutes the first couple songs (combined length 2:09) are the best. Lovely fluid flow, lovely blastbeats. It's normal for girls

Untitled live track filmed from 3 angles. Ambient techno with spines. In 1919 a tank containing 8.6 million liters of molasses exploded in Boston, rapidly flooding a significant part of the north end and injuring hundreds. Imagine that but it was actually moving at the speed of molasses and instead of molasses it was a connection with the universal oneness of the universe

Soul Coughing is a band that rewards digging; besides the many B-sides, if you go backward in time before Ruby Vroom there's a lengthy live period, hiding an album's worth of unique jam-band tracks veering closer to, but unlike, Doughty's later solo work. From a 1992 performance at the Knitting Factory, here's a gankadank with Doughty in full beat poet mode and elements that were later reused/echoed years later in "Soft Serve".
