@sil best guess: same as originally happened. Possible alternative: powerful long wave transmissions from shore(s) counting pips on each GMT hour, radio receivers on ships.
@alex huh, longwave radio. Can you do that with 1700s tech, even if you know how? I know there were crystal spark radios that kids could make in the 1930s out of stuff they had, so it feels possible, but I don't know what you need to have decent broadcast power and whether you can do that with batteries you make out of clay jars and lemon juice
@scalzi That's a pretty huge potato, to be fair! Now all it needs it to appear in one of your stories. You could use it's number—nobody would work it out.
@maikel I think that Mastodon leans towards an AI rejecting audience, and probably more towards Europeans than my Twitter followers which are all in on AI and more towards the US.
@mitsuhiko I agree on the first, disagree on the second (location being important).
Twitter is predominantly a right-wing platform, destroy the planet careless crowd, pro-enterpreneruship, not necessarily innovation but pro-trying-new-fads.
Mastodon is clearly a majority lefty crowd, climate concious, hence by default against LLMs.
And I'm saying this as a lefty who uses Cursor to try ideas.
Watching my children’s first experiences with the unix shell is reinforcing my belief that we need something a lot more forgiving for learners, at the very least with reliable undo.
@mhoye nice. i grew up on dos, so only learned cd and dir as kid.
for a file system level undo, you could sneak some git add and commit stuff into the shell prompt function; and then alias "undo" to go one back, like "git reset --hard HEAD@{1}" or whatever.
or it could have a save-game like interface. a git interface for kids could be a thing. i remember saves being helpful as a kid playing wolfenstein 3d and commander keen.
but of course there will still be no way to undo commands like "sendmail".
Who wants to bet that @malikia_ismyname didn’t even know those books were on the banned list. Because she read some stupid meme on the internet and was just SURE it must be true becomes Moms for Liberty said so!

Tim Sweeney is the CEO of Epic Games, the publisher of Fortnite.
Fortnite is a game targeted at children.
If the CEO of a game targeted at children is defending the production of CSAM, I have some -very- specific questions about his motivations in doing so.
@kepano Is it practical to automatically delete notes when creating them and then not using them? I always end up with Untitled and Untitled 2 and Untitled 3 kicking about my inbox — "delete any note with a title matching /^Untitled( \d+)?$/ and no content" would fix that right up
As we come to the end of day 3 of no water, South East Water have given up all pretense of providing a projected fix time. They have no idea when or if they will fix it.
Anyway. I’m in the studio with the 22/25 year old babies. They want to know what #90s#rock#music sounded like. #Indie, metal, #industrial, all of it. I’ve been providing some key players, but I know you guys have deep cuts and b-sides you’re willing to share.
#90sMusic fedi, it’s your time to shine. Send me your favorite rock albums, singles, remixes, whatever.
