@raganwald where’s the summer festival?
@wtrmt This was from Nordic Ruby, held in a Japanese spa called Yasuragi int he Stockholm Archipelago:
Robes were given to all attendees and speakers staying at the venue, and some of us chose to "commit to the bit."
Age verification challenge:
Growing up, I used a gramophone to play my mum's 78rpm jazz records (on shellac, not vinyl). And was taught to indicate I was about to make a turn by sticking my arm out the driver's side window on vehicles that didn't have indicators. (It was on the driving test back then.)
@cstross
It was my grandparent who had the shellac 78s. My parent collection was all nice modern albums including (first edition) Beatles (father) & Rolling Stones (mother). Though I did also use my father's reel to reel tape player.
Also, nice wooden TV with 4 buttons- one in case a new channel was ever introduced.
The "signing tour" is a one-stop trip to a rainy industrial estate outside Dublin to sign the RPG rule books people paid for as part of a kickstarter! (They'll be mailed out in due course.)
It's a trip away from home organized by a publisher and I'm signing books for customers.
(Why are you looking at me funny?)
@cstross ah the glamorous life of the writer!
I'm GitHub. Pay me millions of dollars per year. I guarantee at least 97% uptime.
It wasn't me, it was the cat!

“When I die, I want to be remembered as a woman who lived in the 20th century & who dared to be a catalyst of change. I don't want to be remembered as the 1st Black woman who went to Congress. And I don't even want to be remembered as the 1st woman who happened to be Black to make a bid for the Presidency. I want to be remembered as a woman who fought for change in the 20th century. That's what I want.”

Can you prove that one of your direct ancestors was a Canadian citizen? Congratulations, you may well be entitled to Canadian citizenship yourself. Not by immigration, but by registration.
I highly encourage my trans and queer followers who live in the US and have the option to claim Canadian citizenship by blood do so.
The older I get, the more often this scene plays in my mind, and the closer to Admiral Adama I feel.
Apple is not making commitments in good faith. for example, the channel to grovel for interoperability is only for developers "whose account membership with the Developer Program is registered in the UK". So bad luck, non-UK developers, or browsers HQd in Oslo, Mountain View, San Francisco. No interop for you.https://www.gov.uk/government/calls-for-evidence/proposed-commitments-from-apple-and-google-app-certainty-and-interoperable-access
@mcc I've never actually crashed wayland when activating picture in picture, but I also don't use debian 13. Nor use picture in picture very much. I didn't know picture in picture tends to crash wayland!
@LilyWayLolz I don't know about "tends", but the problem is, once it's happened once, I'm gonna feel very shy about testing it a second time!
@bodhipaksa I don't! Worst signing *ever* came to my front door—a crate of 1000 frontispieces to sign so they could be bound into a limited edition. Took a couple of days. The only way I could get through it was to mutter "one pound … one pound … one pound …" every time I picked up a new sheet (that's about what it paid above the basic royalty on SRP for a hardcover).
Writing lines used to be a punishment at school. Now it's part of the day job.
@cstross Ugh! I did that once for a few hours and almost went insane.
@Alice I keep challenging bioengineers to build a chicken legged hut so I can travel around as Baba Yaga.
@Alice Though Howl's Moving Castle would work too. Especially if it came with a teleport door so people could come visit me and their other friends easily.

@stux wow - that looks *EXACTLY* like the effect of a black hole in a space missile shooter game I played on an HP terminal in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Loved that game... Have looked for it on the internet several times but no luck.
