I joined #mastodon last week, on a whim, with no idea what to expect

Minutes later, I was welcomed by @dillyd which has never happened on any other platform and was a wonderful introduction. So I posted a couple pictures of my #cats, and found, to my surprise, people reacting and interacting

Maybe it's because I'm not fighting an algorithm, or maybe I just found a place where folks truly appreciate cats. Either way, I'm very happy to be here, and I hope you're prepared for more cat pictures

The EU, as well as every country in the world, should be taking seriously the importance of sovereign systems for communicating and disseminating information.

The ActivityPub protocol is proven and makes many platforms compatible and accessible to each other, allowing for effective information sharing and communication.

The only reason many people do not leave X is that many important services and public figures remain on that platform. Therefore, if countries truly care about digital sovereignty and resilience, they should adopt and promote the use of open source platforms and networks based on the ActivityPub protocol, whether it is Mastodon, Pleroma, Vebinet, or another platform.

Oh, I sent my fourth thousand post here yesterday! 🎉

I found #fediverse and #mastodon quite good already when I spun up my one-user instance in November 2022.

And since, it has only got better. On the tech side (with a lot of improvements both for the server and the clients) and on the interactions I have here, and the wide variety of topics that you fill my feed with.

Really interesting insight into trust and safety on the Social Web that I'd recommend anyone in this space reads.

Social platforms have to be safe and to be safe they must be moderated. There are learnings in here about the work moderators do that I think far too many of us take for granted.

Social platforms have to be safe and to be safe they must be moderated. There are learnings in here about the work moderators do that I think far too many of us take for granted.

btw, clearly claire (because I assume you do my favourite part of Mastodon which is the UI) I put GIFs via a extension. The extension is dirty yet opensource code, and it works beautifully. If you guys feel like adding GIFs to mastodon vanilla (browser version) feel free to rip off from there whatever you need to get it built in.

We won't get rid of the racism and the mansplaining on the fediverse overnight, but giving people control over their replies would significantly improve everyone's experience, and make this place a lot more inviting.
