Always a pleasure to be involved with the Writing Magazine Children's Book Prize. Delighted to announce the longlist today. Congratulations to all writers who completed a story and entered, and to those who have been longlisted.

Good luck going into the next round. The shortlist will be announced on Friday.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 1: How satisfied are you with your current writerly ‘voice’?

It depends on the story. Sometimes it's in first-person, sometimes in third person, And it changes on whether I write poetry or prose.

It's always evolving, so I'm not sure if I'd be completely satisfied.

Kovenlore Book 4.

The “team” of five that came together in Book 2 return to Carrdia, Gliss and Riparia the unlikely friendship. An early Gliss description:

—

Riparia was convinced she was the domineering big sister, but her kitten size and transparent emotions undermined her efforts. Tenacious and temperamental, reckless and caring, she struggled with her contradictions.

—

Be everwell.

COLOR TREMJARA MAP
The image is a color map of the continent of Tremjara on the world of Ontyre.

The continent is roughly oval with notable exceptions, the oval tilted southwest to northeast. In the far north are the Frozen Lands, but otherwise the continent is surrounded by three oceans, the Para-Equa in the west, Terminus in the south, and Titania to the east.

A long, slim peninsula, along with multiple islands, exists in the northwest. In the west and south are multiple, large islands. The southeastern peninsula is a barren wasteland with some volcanic islands off its coast. There are scattered islands up the eastern coast, most notably Pannulus, a roughly circular archipelago.

The continent is roughly divided in half by mountain chains, some more extensive than others. Mountains also exist in other locations, especially the southwest. The west is heavily forested, the east a mix of forests and grasslands. The south desert.

Some notable locations follow. Mythwyll in the southwest was the elfin homeland. In the west, Forstava is still the ora’ean homeland. In the east, Emprensa was once the home province of an empire. In the northeast, Draskrith is the realm of the shadow lords. Below that, and as noted, is Pannulus.

At the continent’s center is nation of Carrdia. It’s surrounded by mountains, except in the west along its border with Forstava, and in the northeast. The continent’s biggest lake is located there, as is the mighty Key River.

this coming month…

My creative ambition this month is quite simple, yet will require extraordinary effort. What I want to accomplish is to continue with editing Book 5.

That’s it. Simple, right?

Not so simple, not when what that looks like is having the discipline to tackle the task each day. The first third is done, but it’s the middle third that’s typically the most difficult for me.

It helps that I’m learning to make it easier.

satisfied with writerly voice?

Satisfied? I don’t think I’m ever truly satisfied with any aspect of my writing.

Besides, the narrative voice is the voice of the narrative character. As for the quality of those voices, I’m sufficiently satisfied with each of them.

Narrative also serves a purpose, so I’m careful to moderate their voices a bit in that role. It’s annoying when the narration is brimming with quirky expressions.

February 1: How satisfied are you with your current writerly ‘voice’?

Working through the sequel, the voice seems OK. There is my authorial voice (the whole books feels like me) and the voices of the different characters.

Pure satisfaction may be found by the reader but I am never utterly satisfied with any writing.

#ScribesAndMakers 1/2: What's 1 creative thing you'd like to get done this month?

Finish the strong first draft of the sequel to the Crooked Medium's Guide to Murder, holding title Crooked Medium Two and get it to betas. Absolute priority.

It is standing up well but I am making a policy decision to not use the full formality of Victorian etiquette where it might confuse the modern reader.

A book cover surrounded by the following aspects in matching Victorian lettering - spooky / Vicious Baronet / Spiritualist Scammers/ Hidden Crimes / older grumpy sapphics / snarky dock-lass/ twisty mystery / Lady in Danger/Queer Found Family

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder by Stephen Cox
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
A rich dark blue background, and a touch of mist. The text appears in gold in a gold rectangular frame, the font is old fashioned implying C19th century. The frame has three rondels or cameos each containing a picture. Top right is a golden bee brooch with the body and one wing streaked with red blood. Middle left is foxgloves, spires of small bell flowers in pink, white and purple. Bottom right is a dark brown medicine bottle, with a pale label. The word LAUDANUM is just visible.
There are pink highlights on some of the letters.
Taken together it is bold, mysterious, and Victorian.
