As Anand Menon (from UK in a Changing Britain), points out, for the European Union:

'An economically flourishing post-Brexit UK risks inspiring Eurosceptics elsewhere. As one senior German official put it... recently, “we have no interest in making Brexit work”.'

Herein lies the UK's problem: rebuilding trade relations with the EU is more important to the UK than it is to the EU, which has other things to consider.

Escaping the consequences of Brexit is not easy!

Escaping the consequences of the Brexit we had makes it even harder, because the unspoken fact of the right-wing Tory Brexit was that the UK left Europe to align itself with the USA.

As European countries seek to extricate themselves from US defence and technology monopolies, the gulf between the EU and the UK will only grow bigger.

@ChrisMayLA6 But this implies that brexiteers and people like me were right. The EU _is_ doing its best to sabotage the UK out of spite.

That means, that given a focus on free trade and an open society, the UK would have flourished by now, but it is being partly kept down by jeallous EU politicians.

I think that position has emerged slowly over time - its hardened. But, the argument of Brexit was we didn't need Europe, so to then blame the EU for making access to the single market difficult, concedes the point that actually the UK's largest neighbouring market (as the gravity theory of trade would argue) was more important than Brexiters suggested.

The hard fact is Brexit demolished a rather favourable deal for the UK & nothing will get that back!

@ChrisMayLA6 Oh, I think what the argument was about, is that the UK is better off without the EU, not europe.

But look no further than Norway, Liechtenstein, Monaco and Switzerland, and you'll find plenty of evidence how those countries prosper, _and_ trade with the rest of the world, without belonging to the EU.

Could the difference be the quality of the politicians and diplomats between those countries and the UK?

Right now, I'd say that hte UK has a golden opportunity to restore trade. Due to Trumps tariffs, the EU is looking towards other partners, and if the UK were to offer zero tarriffs, then the EU might warm up to trading with the UK again! =)

Yes, absolutely its the performance of UK politicians that is the problem - and yes, there is a world in which the UK could proposer outside the EU, but sadly neither our business nor political class are able enough to grasp that future & make it work....
