Gig workers should be for all the hours they put in for their bosses, not just the ones where bosses decide they deserve to get paid for.

@iiradned @pluralistic From my understanding, this applies to US trucking. ... especially during COVID supply chain shock.
Sometimes people complain about "trucker shortage", but what does that mean?
Appearantly, there are 3x the # of people trained & certified to drive a truck than # of truckers needed in US. So why the "trucker shortages"?
During COVID, a big % of trucker work hours was spent on things like waiting in lines at ports to pick up products -- for no pay.
@tanyatussing @iiradned @pluralistic And it’s not only a US/covid issue: drivers in Canada right now are still dealing with this wage theft. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/report-suggests-wage-theft-labour-violations-remain-major-problems-in-trucking-industry-9.7082127
@CAWguy @tanyatussing @iiradned @pluralistic In France the law recognizes "implied overtime". When your boss asks you to do something, if it can't reasonably be done during your work hours, he has to pay. Or he can be made to by our labour courts. The boss is also responsible if you hurt yourself during a work journey, even outside your work hours (because you were there because of him. A famous case was about an employee dying of a heart attack in someone else's hotel room bed. The boss lawyers argued that the employee's personal life was outside the boss responsibility and it couldn't be a work accident to die during sex. The judgement concluded differently: if the employee had slipped in the hotel bathroom or fell in the stairs or any other normal life situation, it would have been the boss responsibility since he commandeered this work travel. And they considered sex to be part of a normal life situation 😁)
