China built up its stockpiles of oil leaving it less vulnerable to supply crises;

China's control of certain crucial minerals (needed for defence technologies) will pay dividends in a long Iranian conflict;

With the US' attention elsewhere, China's 'interest' in Taiwan will be less visible;

and of course China can burnish its declarations of support for international law, in opposition to the war in the Middle East.

Thee's a lot of upside for China right now!
