i drew some placeholder guys #screenshotsaturday
@aeva This one is a way fancier version that I ever made as a kid, but it conveys the idea pretty well.

This second skewers version was a lot closer to what I did.
@aeva i like those goblins. They're cute in an ugly way
@aeva @MLE_online I agree. I think the aesthetic is actually kinda neat.
That gargoyle is giving me some SCP-looking-into-my-soul vibes tho
(which is also cool, but in a diff way)
@Lilshieste @MLE_online i think the gargoyle's head shape has promise, i'll likely iterate on the design
the generic hero and goblins are about the right size, but the oversized gargoyle looking thing is way too big.
idk if i'll keep these proportions or not. i want them to look more like lovingly painted minis eventually, but it's easier to draw them and give them interesting expressions with cartoony proportions
i'm tempted to buy some pewter minis for inspiration / reference, but i'm under the impression that gaming minis are usually super detailed now days and i'd rather a set of something a little more 90s/00s

@aeva
Mewgenics and Hylics had a baby.
@aeva "careful! there are holes in the ground!"
@aeva and then he noticed she was a gargoyle
@aeva friends :)
@aeva "hey, ho, let's go!"
people seemed to like the vibe of the gargoyle placeholder, so i thought i'd rework it into something that wont be as problematic for gameplay, and got a little carried away :3
@aeva Delaney King on Bluesky often has threads with lots of info about old mini figs. She has a huge collection herself. https://bsky.app/profile/delaneyking.bsky.social
The Stuff of Legends site (http://www.solegends.com/) is a great historical reference for both painted and catalog images. They also released a book recently with high quality photos.
I don't know any studios still hand scultping, but if you hit up the 'nerdlings' hashtag or group I'm sure somebody there will have a lead.
@aeva I dunno, that's a pretty fucking cool ass massive gargoyle though. Like that garg is gonna fucking chomp the head of the hero right off
(ALSO THOSE GOBLINS ARE ADORABLE)
@aud it's problematic for gameplay if a monster obscures too much. I want to have a visual gag where large enemies are all crouching down to try to fit under a ceiling that's too low for them.
@aeva that is *amazing*, and you make a good point about obscuring...
that also reminds me of the frost giants in Eye of the Beholder II

@aeva The placeholder art style reminds me a lot of a paper puppet theater that I remember making and playing with as a kid.
My brain keeps looking for the popsicle sticks for moving the figures.
