We took my parents to a bookstore to pick out their Christmas gifts last year, & my dad went straight to the Black history section to find his.
Again I will say it: WHAT?
People are capable of learning more & getting better. We don't see it as often as we'd like, but it. is. possible.
It is even possible for people in their 60s who have lived their whole lives in extremist, right-wing religious fundamentalism.
My mom listened to Rush Limbaugh EVERY DAY when I was a kid. That's where she was.

@artemis My parents were hard core Regan Republicans, and we went to an evangelical church my entire childhood, listened to James Dobson, conservative talk radio, etc. But they do believe in critical thinking, and participated in lots of community outreach to poor and Black and immigrant people. Sometime during Obama and for sure Trump they broke away from the Republican party, and for the first time voted Democrat in 2016.
When I came out in 2018, they were confused at first. They didn't really know much about trans people, but they put in the work. Did research, joined PFLAG and trans support groups, read books, and taught themselves how to support trans people and me. Now they're super liberal, work to campaign for Democrats and protest Trump, joined a new very liberal church, part of a social justice book club, everything. I couldn't be more proud of the changes they've made in themselves.
