I do not understand people who think Ruby is a bad programming language.
They must have never seen other programming languages.
@thomasfuchs since 1995, I’ve made money working with >30 programming languages, and Ruby was my breakout into “doing programming professionally”, it is also in my bottom half as “I’d rather not touch it again”
Granted, I haven’t touched it since 2015, but:
- globals
- money patching
- weirder-assed syntax constructions than even modern javascript
- community insistence that duck typing is good, actually
combined with the general smugness of many ruby people I still encounter*, and the eagerness to overlook the rails core contributor problems,
and I have to wonder sometimes if ruby people have actually seen other programming languages, or if they’re just swallowing the type of FUD about other languages that was going around when I was involved with the language
don’t get me wrong, I still have a lot of friends who do love the language and there are still people I think are great people working in it
but I would take the reach of JS, the predictability of Go, or breadth of Python — all of which are languages I don’t actually like – over Ruby any day of the week
* yes I’m mentally begrudging the community for the sins of a few, but this is perhaps the first time I’ve ever done so publicly
@thomasfuchs
I mean, it's no HyperTalk but from what I've seen it's not terrible.
@[email protected] How about "have seen many programming languages and found Ruby not to be a good fit for my brain/specific flavour of neurodivergence?"
Although even there, the problem isn't Ruby as such; I hit a brick wall on Rails being very opinionated and convention driven and I didn't agree with the opinions or like the conventions. There's very few languages I would say are "bad", and I'll avoid mentioning any by name to avoid stirring any pots.
@thomasfuchs I think Ruby is like most big languages - the good-parts subset is pretty nice, but if you have to deal with code that uses the bad parts it can ruin your whole week. I'm glad I don't have to work in it anymore, because the hybrid oop/functional mix and the weird programming styles people use was really starting to piss me off. The &. operator was kinda the last straw for me. But when I was able to use Ruby like it was Smalltalk-80 it was pretty great.
