btw, clearly claire (because I assume you do my favourite part of Mastodon which is the UI) I put GIFs via a extension. The extension is dirty yet opensource code, and it works beautifully. If you guys feel like adding GIFs to mastodon vanilla (browser version) feel free to rip off from there whatever you need to get it built in.

It just works! Yet I don't have the time to make it pick the most high-quality image of the GIFs so I did it the dirty way, take the ones of the preview.
(at the same time I didn't change it because I'm saving my instance bandwidth by using the low-res version of each gif)
