okay, after not getting an answer for an hour on that, I'm officially worried. does anyone have an ACTIVE way to contact wolfman2000/"dance dad" (who used to be on GDQ streams) other than his discord? I strongly suspect his account has been stolen
Holy crap I'm cited in a 2023 academic law paper... about a pull request on GitHub for a security fix I have neglected to integrate for five years LOL.

I've just woken up from my "hour-long" nap.
I'm back to unmedicated yet good version me.
I can't imagine how did I metabolise elvanse so quickly
@raganwald @pluralistic please tell me the MUMPS part was only the tellers terminal, maybe emulating an IBM2970 or (hopefully) 3600 financial terminal. Not the core banking applications. Even more, tell me the core was COBOL or PL/1 running IMS or CICS transactions.
@jguillaumes I am not going to go any further into the specifics of that particular bank, but here is something you might find interesting: There is enough MUMPS in FinTech to support an entire company dedicated to supporting a superset of MUMPS just for FinTech!
@exchgr Went to a GY!BE show 3 years ago, took along one of the kids and their new sweetheart who had had a very sheltered upbringing. So it was their first concert. Weird place to start.
@timbray what an incredible first concert though! i saw them here in nyc at pioneerworks last year, and also a few years back at webster hall. easily one of my top 5 favorite bands
@hcrichardson.bsky.social wrote about a 1945 US leaflet on how to spot fascism in America. I thought it might be worth screenshotting the relevant bit. ALL of the these warnings have come to pass in the past year. 1/2

@Cadbury_Moose @Dany I used paper tape readers in high school, they were attached to ancient teletype machines repurposed as terminals that printed on paper rather than video displays.
This was a "high-speed" punch on the end of a landline to Liverpool. The link used GPO modems that were about 15" square and 8" high for a frighteningly fast 300 Baud. (Analogue modem built from transistors, polyester caps and ferrite-core inductors!)
The tapes were read on an IBM 2671 optical reader about the size of a washing machine, which frequently disappeared behind a mountain of unspooled tape as the night shift progressed. 3:O)>
<Sigh.> Nostalgia...
Hey #forkiverse people, and everyone else who has joined us recently!
You might be just learning about the thing that makes fediverse special, that it's made up of many communities spread across many servers running different platform.
Now, I won't bore anyone with how all that works, but here are two cool ways to visualize this.
- https://data.stefanbohacek.com/projects/fediverse lets you see which servers you are connected to (I made this one!)
- https://moderation-explorer.online helps you understand the shared responsibility of fediverse moderators
Hope you'll enjoy!

A very bad graphic. The point is taken but that map is very inaccurate. Eg the Canadian southern border should fit perfectly with the USA but it is shrink way too much. There are much better maps which account for there projection errors.
@sleepy62 @infobeautiful oh dear. Point totally missed

Trump is probably horny for Greenland bc of Mercator
@heathborders that’s my assumption too
I'm having a really hard time pulling out all the tentacles of Inkscape's rendering engine. We use it for so many things and in such weird ways each new feature added with a cursed API. Icons, previews, copy and paste, png generation, canavas, cursors...
At what point should I just carve out a new namespace and copy the code into new files and work from that?
If you're the one in charge and spending years of time managing it all, and a new start would be better, then i'd say you have all the right to take the best of it and restart.
Make sure to get it completely under your name, so you don't have the hastle again of redirecting it into other people's opinions. (for whatever reason)
@faraiwe That *is* my perspective! We don't need tools for making more "asbestos," we need a cultural reset to value our users more than some hockey stick growth chart on a powerpoint made by AI. And what we really need are robust, proof-based tools that can dissect a MUMPS app and develop a process for safely porting it to something more developers can work with.
@raganwald @faraiwe @mxjaygrant @pluralistic You know if the financial system was made of more small players using stable APIs rather than shared software, and circumvention laws were not a thing, we probably would have upgraded the financial system a few times by now.
@Shivaekul If you wanted to fill the National Mall from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, it'd take like 1.5 million people. Something like 5% of the entire DC and Baltimore, maybe Philly and Richmond population.
@JessTheUnstill @Shivaekul it does seem daunting for folk in big states or far from DC to get to a “meaningful place” for demonstration.
Just going to a streetcorner with a sign seems futile or invisible.
Except its not. Make traffic slow for a few hours and you will be noticed. Also thinking that if a significant place is needed, many are close enough to their county seat to build the kind of scale for a really righteous rejection of authoritarian murderers
In our January Q&A with Michael, he provides more background on his tribute cover to Isaac Asimov and how he chooses between mediums (oil vs acrylic).

I think we need a better name for J. D. Vance than Couchfucker, and after due conideration I'd like to submit, for your consideration,
"Beelzebubba"
@cstross I always wonder why people call him JD Vance instead of James D. Vance (or just James Vance).
