It's all go at the moment. My standalone Arthurian novel, The Cleaving, is a frankly incredible price this week from Amazon. This explores the familiar story from the perspective of the women involved. You have until Friday to grab it!

Cover art for The Cleaving. Artist Chris Panatier.
Four women surround a sword, looking outwards. Ygraine is a resolute queen, determined to defend her people. Nimue is a wise woman, aware of power's temptations for sorcerers and kings alike. Morgana is a sorceress shaped by her experiences, who knows her worth even if men do not. Guinevere is a beauty, dutifully obedient to her father and husband. Why should she ever question that? They are surrounded by birds, animals and flowers. A castle looms in the background.

The text reads: THE WOMEN OF CAMELOT
HAVE THEIR OWN STORIES TO TELL

Ygraine, Morgana, Nimue and Guinevere have been blamed for the troubles which befell Arthur and Merlin by the chroniclers of Camelot. In truth, they were women with their own powers and destinies whose stories became entwined with the legend of the once and future King.

They were not content to be pawns in men’s games of rivalry and ambition. Supporting each other, they sought a different future for Albion.

HEAR THEIR LEGEND

The Cleaving is a vivid reimagining of the Arthurian legends: a novel that shines a clear light on the stories we tell ourselves about power, chivalry and magic.

Cover art shows four women gathered around a sword and looking outwards; a queen, a wise woman a sorceress and a beauty. A castle looms in the background.
Book extract reads: Five bold knights had claimed the benches closest to the steps leading up to the king’s table. Mouse-Nimue crept to the edge of the dais. She made herself as small as she possibly could as the hall became impossibly large and terrifying. Every instinct of the form she wore urged her to flee for some crevice and safety. Fighting those impulses, she crouched to listen to this conversation and to commit the men’s voices to memory. A mouse’s eyesight was lamentably poor, and her magic could only improve it a little. Everything beyond the closest table was a blur where any number of predators might lurk. Mouse-Nimue trembled.
”It has to be poison,” a lord with a shaved head insisted. His yellow surcote bore an armoured gauntlet embroidered in black. He had never come to Tintagel. Nimue would have remembered him.
Another unknown knight agreed. “It must be, to strike down Brastias, Jordan and Baudwin in the same night.” His blazon was a sheaf of wheat on a dark green weave.
“Poison is a woman’s weapon,” the first lord said emphatically.

The Cleaving

Check out The Cleaving - The Cleaving is an Arthurian retelling that follows the tangled stories of four women: Nimue, Ygraine, Morgana, and Guinevere, as they fight to control their own destinies amid the wars and rivalries that will determine the destiny of Britain. The legendary epics of King Arthur and Camelot don't tell the whole story. Chroniclers say Arthur's mother Ygraine married the man that killed her husband. They say that Arthur's half-sister Morgana turned to dark magic to defy him and Merlin. They say that the enchantress Nimue challenged Merlin and used her magic to outwit him. And that Arthur's marriage to Guinevere ended in adultery, rebellion and bloodshed. So why did these women chose such dangerous paths? As warfare and rivalries constantly challenge the king, Arthur and Merlin believe these women are destined to serve Camelot by doing as they are told. But men forget that women talk. Ygraine, Nimue, Morgana and Guinevere become friends and allies while the decisions that shape their lives are taken out of their hands. This is their untold story. Now these women have a voice. Juliet McKenna is an expert on medieval history and warfare and brings this expertise as well as her skills as a fantasy writer to this epic standalone novel. by Juliet E. McKenna on Bookshop.org UK!
