@timbray these days normally a badly behaved webpage trying to circumvent your ad-blocker, basically its anything with a tight loop over-consuming resources as WindowServer surfaces/handles all the visual compositing … Activity Monitor is your friend ;)

@timbray WindowServer is doing practically everything for you, second only to the kernel. While typing this, I see mine is 25 to 40%).

It's probably not the thing making your Mac hot.
