@mcc I think it's time to move away from web browsers.

@mcc but can it needs to be based on a pre-ai Firefox; because I really really need my tab containers and none of the chromium based one can do it properly.

@mcc Mullvad is a great choice! For both, VPN and browser.

@mcc
At a brief glance that almost seems fine, but the last thing I want is be forced to use one specific program just for the sake of an "exclusive" feature. I don't miss the days before browsers had extensions.

@humbird0 well Google already is phasing extensions out leading to vivaldi promoting effectively a manifest v3 extension as a browser feature

@mcc - or an EFF (Privacy Badger) -branded one.
And base it in the EU, where the security and privacy laws are stronger.
Incidentally, the (EU-created and based) Chromium-based Vivaldi browser now includes Proton VPN with sn on/off switch.

@mcc

standalone uBlock Origin app/daemon/proxy

get a chance to try out all the offbeat and unknown little browsers

also raises the possibility of turning it into a separate little appliance for “firewalling” retro and vintage computers

@mcc I'm no expert, but I don't see how you can make money this way without good sponsors.

@vsc In the past, people who created products received money from the people who used the products, rather than receiving money from random third parties with no specific reason to have an interest in the product's success

@mcc Absolutely. I love this approach like how Protonmail does it. But people won't pay for browsers in 2026. Orion browser proved that. So in my view, launching a new browser in 2026, alongside several others, is a serious challenge on both the business and technical fronts.

@mcc I think they’d end up something like https://helium.computer/ - as an effort to fuse a minimally chromed chromium with a maximally blocking native uBlock origin, ive been impressed at how much lighter it makes the web feel

@mcc yt-dlp includes a browser reimplemented in python, just enough to download youtube videos. That usually seems to be the hard part- so we could just glue that onto any other simpler browser
