Finding out Microsoft has bought an acre of nvidia cards they _can’t rack or power up_ is just… your hoarding has quadrupled the price of RAM and you can’t even rack what you already have?!? And won’t be able to for years?
(Edit: 19:20 in the above video)
There's a non-zero chance they'll end the o in a landfill, still in their packaging.
@mhoye Potentially interesting reading on this is Edward Zitron's newsletter, where he mentions that it seems difficult or impossible to find any data centers with enough power to account for anything more than a fraction of the six million Blackwell GPUs NVidia has shipped: https://www.wheresyoured.at/nvidia-isnt-enron-so-what-is-it/#is-nvidia-shipping-millions-of-gpus-and-putting-them-in-warehouses-where-are-the-6-million-shipped-blackwell-gpus
@mhoye you mean won't be able to, *EVER*. Seeing as every penny of funding for these data center builds has just completely evaporated.
Blue Owl just yanked over $10B from Oracle that was going to build data centers for Sham Altman.
They swear they have totally legitimate replacement funding. It's just from Canada, you've never met them.
@mhoye everybody is pulling out of these data center projects as fast as they can. Some of them are just walking away despite signed contracts.
Construction has completely halted at basically all of them. Opposition is getting much more stringent, vocal, and threatening. The debt the companies are issuing claims AAA, and yet junk has far more takers. And insurers are just "fuck no we won't touch this shit."
@mhoye like watching someone come in dead last in a german boardgame except with disastrous geopolitical-technological-economic consequences
