For writing books, it's @scrivenerapp —been using it since 2008 (it was still in beta at the time!) and have written about 25 books using it in that time. Many of which would have been impossible to produce without it. It's not a word processor (although it subsumes one), it's a tool for managing the deep structure of book-length compound text documents. Makes complexity transparent.

I used it for years and it was one of the only reasons I was still dual booting Windows last year. Would love it if they made a linux version, but I doubt they will.
I've been using Obsidian with the Longform plugin since then, but it's no Scrivener.
@cstross @scrivenerapp I bought it based on your recommendation with a vague „I might actually write one of those books someday“ in the back of my head.
Never wrote a book, but it is a *great* tool to plan long RPG campaigns in.
