The way I see the current development is, both Meta's Threads and (originally) Twitter's Bluesky were a response to the grassroots attempt to take back social media.

While Meta arguably failed (though some might say that their goal was more about avoiding regulatory scrutiny and never took the ActivityPub integration seriously), I think Bluesky taking off is a result of our community's failure to rise to the occasion and create a safe and welcoming environment.

And I know some here who want to gatekeep fediverse to themselves, keep it insular and mostly white, will cheer on this.

I want to believe that there's more of us who want to see more diversity here. We sure do have our work cut out for us.
