I just cant get over post from people complaining how terrible Windows is now, and that they cant even access notepad, but yet refuse to move to some other OS. Like, Linux is right there.

@mainframed767 fyi, this smug self-congratulatory attitude that trivialises the actual difficulties involved with switching is what puts a lot of people off
@mainframed767 what's the Linux replacement for Pangolin BEYOND and my FB3 laser controllers? what's the Linux replacement for Rekordbox that works with my DDJ-FLX10? what's the Linux replacement for Altium? (and before you answer KiCad, you are required to perform a field simulation to calculate the impedance of a high speed trace.)
for anyone whose computer use is more than just generic software it's a very nontrivial migration that requires a lot of work and significant compromises.
@mainframed767 acting like it's trivial (and even outright claiming so) is minimising the hard work and pain and suffering it *actually* takes for people to shift over. if you tell this to people they will absolutely feel gaslit when they realise you lied to them and they actually can't use half their stuff.
@mainframed767 yeah windows is an absolute fucking state right now but that doesn't mean linux magically became a workable friction-free (trivial, in your words) solution overnight. it didn't. pretending that it did is a disservice to everyone. not only does it piss off and alienate people who are being promised things that aren't getting delivered, but the delusional "Linux is the best!" dogma also contributes to the learned helplessness and apathy around bugs and friction in the ecosystem.
@mainframed767 sorry to rant but this shit has been driving me nuts for years
@gsuberland @mainframed767 It's okay, macOS is the way to go!
*bolts out of room*
@gsuberland it may have been difficult 10-15 years ago, but these days its trivial, there's thousands of hours of youtube videos showing how to do it step by step. Installing, or upgrading to, Windows 11 is just as difficult nowadays. Unless, of course, you're stuck because you need it for specific Adobe products or other office productivity.
@mainframed767 yeah nah this is barely even true for your average user, let alone anyone with specific needs
