Why is the UK (still) dependent on a migrant workforce?

Well, a key contributing factor is employers' attachment to low pay & dismal terms & conditions of employment.

So, let's not blame migrants for seeking out jobs in their new country; lets be clear, its the UK's employers, their labour cost-focussed management mind-set & their continuing rubbish management practices that are the real problem here.

We need a sea change in employment practice(s)!

The UK & USA deliberately gave up manufacturing capability & sent it to Asia.

Why?

Good wages enable economic mobility. Middle class kids got post-secondary education.

The Moneyed could not tolerate desegregation in society.

The bigotry is too useful a tool for divide & conquer.

@ChrisMayLA6 Remember those days of yore? The 50s, 60s and early 70s? When jobs were for life and the economy hummed along reasonably well? Pay was not great for everyone but people got by. Now we have unstable, poorly paying jobs and stagnant economies. There is a lesson there somewhere 😉

I have belief (untested) that MBAs train people in how to manage costs, but not on how to invest. This results in lack of investment in equipment and staff training. Symptoms of this is include reduced productivity growth through lack of investment in capital and staff. An indicator is industry lobbiests bleating for migration of skilled staff instead of training.

Yep, I found it easy to tell the difference between accountants and MBAs vs economists. Accountants start with questions on costs, economists would ask about value.
