I stumbled across maps from 1577 online, incl Cheshire, where I'm from. I went down an Elizabethan rabbit hole & bought a book about her advisor Cecil. Then, on Saturday, I went into a local charity shop, and there was map on the wall (in Bern!) And, reading more, I learned it was owned by Cecil! Kismet.
@Richard_Littler Big love for the map - I spent 8 months as an assistant teacher for German in Warrington in the second half of the 90s. It's amazing how many place names are still recognizable today.

It can be a very odd thing...have you ever noticed, upon learning a word for the first time, you WILL hear that word again within the next 24 hours?

I'm prone to obsession if I get my teeth into a subject. Recently I saw an engraving of an unnamed London road but knew which one from a street ornament. Last week I couldn't make sense of a sentence in a recent novel because my brain at 1st saw the word 'divers' with its 16th C meaning - 'diverse'
