#WritersCoffeeClub Feb 24—What's your greatest challenge in fleshing out your setting?
(SF/F world-builder's perspective here):
Knowing when to stop.
The setting is both a stage for the characters to play on and a discipline on what they can do: it needs to extend beyond the reader's awareness but simultaneously not to intrude and get in the way of the story.
So it gradually develops, in a feedback loop with the story and the protagonists.

Mine is taking cohesive notes. I am absolutely awful at taking good notes I can reference later. Currently trying out Obsidian and it's wiki-like capabilities (plus sync) which seems a bit better for me so far, but any tips are appreciated.
@tinsmith My tips are useless to you: I just write disjointed multi-thousand word essays containing pocket universes, then cut'n'paste them into a shape that makes sense to my headmeat.

Having much this problem (on a much smaller scale, obvs) with an RPG setting. Really pleased with it, but plot...
@cstross I find the longer I take to write a story, the more the worldbuilder's disease progresses. I have too much time to think about these things and not the actual plot.
