Right now (and perhaps for some time) one could sum up geopolitics, the current war(s) in the Middle East & any number of other international disputes with the words of George Santayana:
'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it'...
Of course, the Tangerine Tyrant isn't even trying to remember.....

Hard to disagree given the current fetish for religious crusades, but without wanting to be contrary I'd suggest that it's at least as important for political leaders to imagine the future, especially given climate projections.
We seems to be caught in a millennia-old doom loop of imperialism, wars, famine and exploitation and all history can teach us is what to expect from the next stage without any indication of the velocity required to exit the loop.
Yes, of course; remembering history must (as you say) be linked to imagining how the future should unfold, and can be made to unfold
@ChrisMayLA6 Hmm, am not so sure about the TT not remembering - seems he’d quite like to be like Hitler and exterminate all those he doesn’t like or who disagree with him. Only Hitler wasn’t surrounded by morons as is Trump. But there is crazy Theil steering Trump towards societal insanity.
@ChrisMayLA6 Difficult for him to remember as I doubt if Trump ever had any knowledge of history in the first place, even before his dotage.
And he's got rid of all the competent advisors (recalling his 1st term wasn't so deranged because there were people who were able to rein him in) who might have remembered for him.
