DJ here has been doing some of the worst transitions I've heard in a set, to the point that it has become fully comical. Just straight mixing 90bpm disco into 120bpm house, zero beat or key matching, in some cases three false starts on a track or leaving the second deck fader on 1/4 volume while picking tunes and scrolling through.

we got Shakira into ABBA into an odd house remix of Journey, it has been... eclectic?
I suspect the DJ for Monday nights is not very invested in top notch performances lol
I almost wish I had brought my library with me on a USB stick so I could plug in and get people out of their chairs.
I'm pretty sure I could strike a balance between "a bit too chill for the party-focused bar" and "the normies are leaving because the long haired man is playing scary music". for a while, at least.
@gsuberland this is why my music is on my phone.
organised by artist/album/track for easy findage.
I like to be in control of my own soundtrack :)
@evilstevie for DJing I need the library, not just the tunes.
@gsuberland Alexa that’s so sad and relatable play “it’s my life” by bon jovie
@InsiderTreat less "move!" and more "if you take the night off and accidentally leave the laptop unlocked you can drink on my tab"
@tthbaltazar mefjus remixes of noisia might be a bit much for the Monday night demographic 👀
"do you work here?" "no I am just weird and came prepared"
I have just remembered the time I went to a bowling alley with some university friends. The music was predictably generic and boring, so I asked the DJ there if he could play a System of a Down track (I believe it was BYOB). he jokingly said only if you have it on you, so I produced the Mesmerize/Hypnotize double album set from my pocket. I don't even recall why I had it with me.
he was taken aback, for a moment couldn't decide whether to concede the bluff or play it, and in the end played it.

@gsuberland a big part of the unlock for me was realising that I was comparing myself against these world-class DJs I'd go to see once in a while, whereas I should be focusing on the "broadly competent but not incredible" local scene if I'm to ever actually gain real experience.
I'm certainly capable of mixing in meaningful/decent ways, I think I've got decent enough taste in the music I play and there's something of a progression in there. That seems to be better than a lot of "professionals" manage.
@cloudthethings it is funny how the skill doesn't really correlate with amateur / professional status at all.
@gsuberland paaaaaaaiiiin
@[email protected] When I was sixteen my drum teacher pulled me in at the last moment for a concert because an orchestra member was ill. I had one job: whack a huge bass drum about six times.
One of those times I whacked it a full beat late, in a moment of complete silence from the rest of the orchestra.
My drum teacher afterwards said "don't worry, the audience will have assumed it was on purpose. Apart from the musicians in the audience - they'll be having a good laugh."
I wonder if you're hitting a similar situation or whether they're just, er, not very good...
@gsuberland
okay that has to be intentionally bad
there is no way the fader is at 1/4 by accident
@tthbaltazar the answer could be rum
