The general;

"Here is a video about something no one on this planet knows but it's of super massive importance"

Kinda a description for conspiracy theories, making you feel 'special' because you get to know something and others "just don't know"

Bullshit alarm 🐮

@stux In....2009? My oldest was able to get on to yt, pc was in a shared room.
The only rule? Do not click on the right hand side in the suggested area.
3 clicks on that would bring you directly to utter destruction, just awful stuff.

@stux My feed consists of TTS skits, VHS tapes, including television and personal collections, more nostalgia, music, gaming, more television broadcasts from the 90s and 2000s, and maybe later than that, radio recordings/airchecks, storytelling, aviation, and independent weather channels. Also, why would they put an algorithm on the subscription feed? It doesn't belong their! They got the subscription feed all kinds of crazy, especially on the mobile app.

@stux You can most clearly see the effect by using anon ('incognito') browser mode over a VPN. This gives YT nothing to use as background for making suggestions that are unrelated to the current video.

Then access some video you're interested in, say music or renewable energy, and lo and behold... Youtube insists on suggesting the most awful non-related crap. They are probably a worse source of brainwashing than even Xitter.

I think I watched about 30 seconds of an environmental science hoax video a couple of days ago before realizing what it was, but it was enough to trigger a deluge. I would occasionally get a nutball recommendation in my feed before that, but today was a flood of right wing nutballs.

My main viewing is EVs/battery tech, basketball, poker, science and anime.

@stux

all algo's do that. I knew, when I was on tik tok, that when a video with a wall of text popped up that I needed to flick videos away until I got a cat video and then the FYP feed would be normal for a while. the wall of text videos were the beginning of a dark hole that ends with gang stalking videos.

@stux My "feed"is what I subscribed to, thanks (New)Pipe(d). 👀

It's kinda beyond me why people want to see anything but what they decided to see. Like why let a company which's only interest is profit and making the rich richer spoonfeed what you see and base your opinion on? That's some of the most anti-freedom and anti-democratic behaviour I can imagine.

@stux It recommends stuff that other people with similar profiles to you have watched, but there are a lot of gullible idiots out there.

A cleaner feed should come from good feedback. When confronted with low quality junk, click the Ellipsis button and then select “not interested”. Liberally use the “don’t recommend this channel” button. Report and flag to get channels demonetised. After a while, the algorithm should stop recommending far-right crap, AI slop, and conspiracy theories to you.

@stux I watched some ancient history videos on YT a while back and then it recommended me more... but the recommendations turned out to be ancient history as told by a white supremacist. I wasted a good amount of time listening to this guy before he started being blatant enough for me to look up the user to see if this was a known issue with him (and it was).

@stux

If you disable watch history and use the subscription page you get an almost* unmodufied reverse chronological feed of videos as they are released by those you are subscribed to and no one else.

* Apart from (1) they still insert algorithmically suggested shorts every so often in an attempt to lure you into mindless swiping. And (2) the videos shown below any video you open are then recs based on that that video so watch and then always click back to your own time ordered feed.
