I recall Cory Doctorow talking about how Amazon treats ebooks as a sale for lowering the tax they owe, but as a lease in order to reduce what they have to pay authors.

You never "bought" anything, or you'd still have it. I learned that early and painfully when DRM-Free Fictionwise was bought by Amazon, and all my books disappeared. Now I buy DRM-free, or crack the copy protection so I *actually* own the book.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic Did they seriously put "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" right under the announcement that you can no longer play your purchased movies due to the limits of a licensing arrangement?

@chrisoliver @pluralistic The worst DRM experience that I've had was with ITunes. I was an early adopter and had purchased tons of music with DRM. When Apple finally switched, I was told that it would cost me $500 to convert my library. Haven't purchased DRM'd since, and I've kept anything important to me in text files. It's not just that proprietary formats are wrong from a political perspective -- you're also very likely to outlive them.

I laughed out loud at "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" at the bottom of the announcement. Seems like play has at least one limit.
