Caught this monarch in a posture that inspired millions of lower back tattoos. Butterflies don’t usually outstretch their wings this way but most of the reference illustrations that come to mind were based on pinned specimens. Which makes sense since they didn’t have high-speed photography at the time, and trying to draw a live butterfly in real-time puts a tremendous strain on the artist’s hands.
