Let's say I am unwilling— on principle if nothing else— to provide ID in order to continue using a site like Mastodon.
How long do I have before I have to get off of mastodon.social?
(Also, how is it it says "adopted" on the same day the text was released? Was this voted on by some kind of democratic body? Was it simply introduced by some entity that can create law by dictate?)
@mcc for all intents and purposes, it will only apply to tiktok and youtube. Youporn will continue to serve the kids with little to no barriers. Even in the UK :-)
The European Commission has made a proposal to the parliament, the parliament will have to revise it and approve, amend or deny it.
The European Parliament frequently trashes EC proposals, they have very different POV on issues like privacy, for example. Since it is really elected by member state governments, the EC is more driven by their interests; the EP is directly elected by people. And lobbies are very, very active at the EP.
They will very likely make big changes or refuse it.

EU law is complicated but as the executive body the Commission have so called "right of legislative initiative" which they can use to guide the EU parliament towards certain agendas (though the final law may be very different)
@mcc the European Commission adopted it (aka they agreed to it themselves), now it becomes a proposal that will be negotiated by the European Parliament and the Member States (aka still a long way to go, but the EC proposal is the starting point)
@mcc It's been in committee, now it's out and needs to be formally voted on by both the EU, and the member states.
@[email protected] @[email protected] And in terms of time frame, it needs to go through both the EU level legislation process and then each member state needs to write and take through its own legislation process the actual national implementation. You should get from warning (and hopefully it may even be stopped)

@mcc As I understand it, the Commission is a gatekeeper. They must approve before a new law goes to the Parliament and member states.
But I could misunderstand it…
