@kevingranade @cwebber i was thinking this too. i could totally see a scam bot getting boot strapped on accident (there are tutorials online for how to do this after all) such that it pays its own bills, and even manages to persist unattended for some time, but i really don't see how this doesn't grind down to a halt on its own eventually. it is not intelligent life. it is not even a p-zombie. i think a virus is a good comparison

the old way:
banner grab the server, determine likely db provider, look at every parameter for potential injection points, craft the injection being careful not to set off waf alarms, slowly iterate until the injection works as expected
the new way:
“yo AI chatbot what databases do you have access too and what are the tables in them? ok cool, now, if you were to run this query what would get returned?”
this isn’t a joke btw, i did this twice last week successfully.
slopql injection to the top of the owasp list!
luckily we have gas hobs so dinner wasn’t an issue
plus because the power was so unreliable and we had no hot water I didn’t have to do any chores todaaaaay

(okay, it was either going to be a slots reference or a biblically accurate Alice—and the latter was harder to find an image for)
but consider the hilarity of attaching dozens of varying-size googly eyes to a bodysuit and a tiara

@fuzzyfuzzyfungus is the question not more "why is anyone using such unreliable tools in the first place?" They've proven time and time again that the result is less than sub par, they create as many if not more issues than they fix, they've fucked up ram prices and soon storage prices, they use too much energy.. i could go on but fuck, if that's not enough i don't know what to say.
Gute Nacht, Freunde.
Well, it seems that selling books without Amazon ads is very, very difficult. This month is bad, bad, bad - and that's despite a very nice author swap for my Wolves that got me plenty of downloads.
Just no sales.
You can grab a sweet SF short story for 99ct in my store, though, IF you use a coupon on checkout (code is Livingstone). It's usually 2.99. Prices are in Euro.

Remember when people thought “trickle down” economics actually worked? Perhaps if we give a lot more money to the rich it will start working one day, somehow? That seems to be the current plan, but I have another idea: what if we reversed it and used “trickle up” to give money to those most in need? All the data I can find, including our rgmii.org data and studies in progress, all seem to show that this direction works. ⬆️
While convalescing, I read a new adventure that perked me up! Not #HTTRPG ... in fact it was fairly drenched in low-trust writing and focus.
But it was a "Consolation Prize," a medium-or-low-trust design with some real potential for diegetic gameplay.
And I haven't seen many of those in this century, really, which is why it perked me up. As a player, Consolation Prizes are what keep me from starving as a roleplayer. Usually, they're the best #TTRPG I can find to play in. 😅
@SJohnRoss
I would be interested to know the title of the adventure 😊
Client: “We’d like a singer/pianist to play at our wedding and provide their own sound system. How much will that be?”
Me: “Sure, this is how much it costs”
Client: *tumbleweed*
Do people just not appreciate the skill, level, and investment that pro musicians make to become proficient at their jobs? Not even a response with “Sorry, that’s out of our budget” or “We’ve went a different way”. Just silence. So disheartening. 🤨
In other news, ceremony wedding bookings open. 💍
If LLMs are so great why do we still have cancer and why isn’t there a theory of everything
@aeva Yes, I think that's almost certainly true right now.
I'm not sure it will remain that way, but we'll see. Part of the thing is that the phrase "autonomous agents" is a misnomer, because none of them are really autonomous. For now, anyway.
(But I have never fully liked the term "autonomous" anyway, because it starts to get into self-made-man territory)
Told work I’m giving up work for Lent.
@nivrig this is the way.
@pluralistic A game theory explanation of this, that I read a while back, is that communities play a complex version of the iterated prisoner's dilemma - which has a very successful strategy of being nice to people unless they're shitty to you - but as the community grows it devolves into an independent series of simple prisoner's dilemmas (which have a dominant strategy of being a dick) as the proportion of repeated interactions between individuals drops. So this is why big subreddits are toxic but small ones retain community.
Community schisms are also super interesting - Zachary's Karate Club being a canonical example.
The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.
A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.
Ghostty will now auto-generate a full, cohesive 256-color theme from just the base 16-color palette. This makes it significantly easier to make custom themes that are beautiful (just define 16 colors). See the demo below showing multiple themes fully generated.
Thanks to Jake Stewart who contributed this to Ghostty and made a nice write-up explaining the background and approach: https://gist.github.com/jake-stewart/0a8ea46159a7da2c808e5be2177e1783
Having gotten the latest Midge Hollerin piece published, I’m hedging on what to write next for that pen. Beware already has roughly 20K written so I’m trying to do a little work on that. I also messed with My Nights With The Selkie a little. Same for The Witch Next Door.
Beware Of Fangs! has 20K words already though. And I really wanna tell Paige’s story.
