Bust of Piet Heyn, Hendrick de Keyser (II) (attributed to), 1636
Piet Heyn became a seaman at a young age. When he was fifteen years old, he was taken prisoner by the Spanish and made to serve two years as a galley slave. After his release, Heyn pursued a career in the merchant marine: he held high-ranking positions in the Dutch West India Company. In 1628 he captured a Spanish treasure fleet (known as the â€˜Silver Fleetâ€™) off the coast of Cuba. A year later he perished at sea.

Textielmagnaat Philips de Flines was een ware kunstliefhebber. Zijn pand aan de Herengracht richtte hij in met een speciale kunstkamer, die hij liet decoreren door Gerard de Lairesse. De kunstenaar vervaardigde vijf schilderijen in zwart en wit - ‘grisailles’ - met verbeeldingen van positieve eigenschappen van De Flines. Het bevorderen van de wetenschappen was bijvoorbeeld een van de goede eigenschappen van een edelman.

Inking time!

A work in progress piece; there's a letter S inked in black line art, but the S is a fox dragon type creature with an extended tongue that grows into a celtic knot that fills the spaces in the loops of the S, and there's a thicker penciled celtic knotwork border around the edges of the paper that I'm in the process of tracing over in black ink.

Doing the draws :)

This is on recycled cotton Khadi paper, A4 size. This is the year I try using all my proper, fancy papers and doing bigger pieces that take more time, rather than doing quick A5-sized bits on non-fancy paper as a 'I'll just do this cheap fast thing for a quick sale' thing.
