Before I got the Fuji and after I stopped using the Canon, I was in my iPhone era. The iPhone 6 Plus camera had a charm that I don’t see in later iPhone cameras. No dynamic range. Poor in low light. But in good light its photos felt nicely naturalistic #photos #photography

Another reason to revisit old work is that with digital photography you aren’t stuck with the choices you made at the time. Back in 2018 I was largely a black-and-white all-the-time photographer, but I’ve been looking over those photos and reworking them in colour. Sometimes it works. I do writing and photography retrospectives to find my “voice”. Bodies of creative work have a set of consistent choices that together define an author’s voice. These four photos, taken over 25 years, have a similar voice despite being taken on three different kinds of cameras (manual film SLR, iPhone, mirrorless) #photos #photography

I had a similar problem with this winter scene from Parc Jarry. I LOVED the black and white version, personally, but most people I tested it on preferred the colour version, which I didn’t like. So I came up with a third version that accomplished much of the same as the black and white, but in colour. #montreal #photos #photography 5/6

In this case, I strongly prefer the monochrome version and found initial the colour versions using any of Fuji’s profiles to be substantially worse. So, I sat down and did a bit of thinking and came up with the approach I used in the third version. #montreal #photos #photography 4/6

The first example has to be in black and white, because the whole point of the colouring of many animals is to break up the shape and make them a bit harder to spot. A few of the photos I’ve been posting lately have been in black and white for similar reasons #montreal #photos #photography 2/6

Continuing with my Montréal era, here are three photos from Parc Jarry, spring, summer, and autumn. The photo of the bloodied gull is one of my personal favourites. The gull had tried to snack on a duckling and all of the duck mamas ganged up and it was lucky to get away with its life #montreal #photos #photography
