Accessibility is a FOSS value. ♿️

You might ask why I advocate for #OpenSource so fiercely as a disabled creator. It is simple, proprietary software is a black box. If it doesn't work for your needs, you're stuck.

With #FOSS, the community can adapt, fork, and improve tools for everyone. Freedom isn't just for power users, it is for accessibility.

For instance, there is BRLTTY, which provides access to the Linux console for people who use a refreshable Braille display.

But people naturally think of physical disabilities when they consider accessibility. We also need tools for cognitive load and distraction. Tools like Logseq allow you to link thoughts non-linearly, making it easier to track projects when your brain feels scattered. Even the stability of Debian can be an accessibility tool for those of us who find the constant breaking changes of other OSs anxiety-inducing.

A top-down view of a silver laptop centered on a rustic, light wooden table. Next to the laptop is a cup of coffee on a white saucer, a small white pitcher, and a glass coffee carafe. A smartphone showing the time as 10:35 AM and a pair of black rimmed glasses lie to the left. The scene is peaceful, human-led workspace, representing intentional and accessible technology.
