#SuperbOwl

At a jousting event in Estes Park, CO way back when (we were there for the hiking, honest.)

Someone had a couple of owls, and were letting people see them up close. I am ignorant as to the variety. So handsome.

An extremely handsome large owl, only about 4 feet from the camera, sits on the heavy leather glove of his handler. We had a good discussion with her (as I recall) about owls in general.

The bird is 15" tall, with mottled brownish-tan wings, a white bellow, and a beautiful flat white snowy face.Their beak seems to almost disappear, and point directly down, almost invisibly.

I've never forgotten getting to meet them.

@czarbucks

You can see why they are sometimes called "ghostly".

Fun facts... #BarnOwls have their own genus (Tyto) and live on all continents except Antarctica.

Barn owls have excellent low-light vision, and can easily find prey at night by sight.

πŸ‘‰ But their ability to locate prey by sound alone is the best of any animal that has ever been tested. πŸ‘ˆ

[This is facilitated by one ear opening being higher on the skull than the other--giving them 2-axis discrimination for sound. Most birds/animals only get left vs right.]

They can catch mice in complete darkness in the lab, or hidden by vegetation or snow out in the real world. #Birds #Hearing
