@synlogic4242 This is where I live. I'm conversant, by degrees, with over 600 (trad) RPGs. I'm properly enthusiastic about 200 of them.
I have enough of them. But I will never have enough adventures, worlds, and resources ... and those are also the areas where and RPG designer's skills really shine (or don't).
On the other hand: newbies love to make systems, and fortunately for them, it's brainlessly easy, so it's a good place to start.
@SJohnRoss agreed. plus most TTRPG systems rules anymore are just forks/tweaks/variants on older/bigger ones. the point was never the rule system. it was about going on adventures in our imagination, with friends, ij person, to have fun and exercise parts of our minds we would generally get to do in our modern vanilla everyday lives. I like DCC by GG, for example, because they reinforce that explicitly as a design premise. but having more adventures and supplements, esp by third parties, is a win for everyone. I'm slooooowly trying to work my way back into being an indie/homebrew author of adventures too. so I intend to walk the walk :-)
@synlogic4242 I'm glad you have one you particularly enjoy.
@SJohnRoss it sounds like you're aware of many more systems than I am. my knowledge of the TTRPG space is weighted to the 70s/80s, only a few modern ones. lately I've enjoyed DCC. but also a longtime fan of Paranoia and Call of Cthulhu. the campaign niverses of Traveller, Star Frontiers, Gamma World, Top Secret. loved some aspects of Champions and GURPS.
what are your faves?
@synlogic4242 Honestly I mostly use my house systems these days, but I still have a lot of love for Call of Cthulhu as well! My favorite of all time is the original Ghostbusters RPG from the mid-80s. I did a lot of GURPS in the 90s. I like games with a lighter heart, like TFOS and Toon. I think Paranoia is an all time great in its first two editions. I've done some Hero System and Fudge and TWERPS and so on. So several points of overlap with yours.
@SJohnRoss I played Toon! and RuneQuest. and orig Marvel. fuzzy memory only of Ghostbusters. played an Egyptian one maybe by Palladium. played Recon. Twilight 2000. once owned Hackmaster but never played it. not heard of TFOS
