Interesting that even on the Denton side, the combined Labour/Green vote would easily eclipse Reform. But, as you say, it's a leftwing seat.

@ChrisMayLA6 @sjwrenlewis I think it’s a fool’s errand trying to read potential GE trends from a byelection result but the evidence from Europe is clear: when centre-left parties ape the far-right, they don’t neutralise them, they normalise & strengthen them. I’ve been saying for >2 years that Labour is rolling out the red carpet for Reform

I don’t know what electoral impact it may have but there is also a fracturing of parties on the far-right with the Lowe/Musk axis

@sjwrenlewis @ChrisMayLA6 Any strategy that involves Labour not being actively hostile to a progressive alliance is wishful thinking. Labour (as a party) HATES the Greens and always wheels out it’s nastiest vitriol against us. What we can hope for is a Labour leader who will have the appetite for a fight to stay in government after the next election even if it means heading up an alliance. May had it, Brown didn’t.

I used to live in the constituency next door and I generally agree with this statement: "Reform lost because it is a very left wing seat." It's a very worker friendly seat and they despise the Tories. I believe that some of the swing to Reform is a result of people falling for the "man of the people" lie. To beat Reform, that lie and the fact that Reform is Tory++ needs to be exposed.

@ChrisMayLA6 @sjwrenlewis The phrase "Labour and other socially liberal parties" is problematic.

If Labour were willing to engage cooperatively with other left parties to keep the right bloc out, then they could easily do so: it is within their gift to introduce proportional representation before the next general election.

But they are more concerned with sometimes getting absolute power, than cooperating with others on the left to always get better than the worst outcome.

That result will ensure Labour will join Reform on the right because that’s what their paymasters clearly want.

They definitely won’t want green policies - that’s for certain.

I agree with the post. Stopping Reform and the Tories requires #Labour to be part of the solution.

And that can best be done if Labour focuses on its left flank and workers.
