If there was ever going to be a film or a series based upon your WIP, what do you imagine the soundtrack would be like? What genre?
I'm sufficiently oblivious to film/TV that I have no idea about soundtracks (other than that I find hollywood mood-setting music incredibly intrusive, annoying, and manipulative—I hate having my emotions played on like a piano by a film score).
@cstross The only one I have a clear idea for, a cross between Howard Shore, Ennio Morricone, and a few bagpipes.
For the curious, I wanted to write a fantasy with guns. When did guns get too good? WW1. What was right before? The wild west. I have no idea why it took a turn for the Scottish.
@Verain IIRC the Scottish Highlands are the eastern end of the Appalachians (or vice versa). Same geological formation, before the Atlantic opened up in the middle (mid-oceanic ridge where two plates are slowly pulled apart).
@cstross I deviate a lot from Earth geology, but at least I try to keep it internally consistent.
@cstross for sheer what the fuckery I would go with chap hop/ Mr B the gentleman rhymer for the Laundry files. He is not a bad music producer, but dont let the Burke know I said that, I am supposed to be team Elemental.
In an ideal world I would be writing novels about groups of revolutionary anarchists smashing society before rebuilding it based on fairness, equality and respect for all living creatures.
So for the first violent part of the book RATM - Killing In The Name Of would be perfect. So would The Animals - We Got To Get Out Of This Place in a different way.
I would definitely get Henry Rollins on the soundtrack, either his solo work or as part of Black Flag. Rise Above **has** to be there now I think about it. Basically anything conveying righteous anger, rage and fury so thrash metal, hard core punk, techno, jungle, old skool gangsta rap, drill etc.
Of course there cannot be just "western" music on the soundtrack. It needs music from all around the world as the revolution in the book would be global.
After the revolution takes place am not so sure about the music. I don't want it to be what my mother would call "All hippified" Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill or the Kinks - Waterloo Sunset have the right tone but they are still a little hippified in my book. I am not sure if the sort of music that I am thinking about even exists. Probably listening to more music from around the world would be a good place to look for it.
