The BMA has failed in its attempt to halt the use of the term 'medical professional' to cover Physicians Associates as well as Doctors in the General Medical Council's guidance & administrative work... its appeal against last year's finding that PAs could be termed medical professionals failed in the High Court yesterday.

This leaves the possibility (as far as doctors & the British Medical Association are concerned) of a confusion for patients between (actual) doctors & PAs.

NEW: South Carolina, which doesn’t require hospitals to disclose measles-related admissions, has reported only 20 such hospitalizations since Oct. 2.

That leaves doctors with an incomplete picture of how the outbreak is affecting the community.

Here's the coincidence of two major problems - the costs of US health care, and the difficulty of getting (travel) insurance firms to pay up claims (especially in medical related areas).

Having had a child delivered early in the US (and needing time in intensive care) costing around $200k, the insurance company spent some time denying the parents claim before finally paying up.

As Roy Lilley (NHSManagers.net) points out the move to source around 30% off all diagnostic tests from the private sector (to reduce waiting lists) is yet one more indicator that the strategic intent of this Govt (as past Govt.s) is to shift the NHS from provider to purchaser of health care services.

Buts as Lilley points out:

this creates a free-ride problem in health-related training;

increases regulatory/oversight costs; and

undermines/fragments a coherent health service!
