@[email protected] For teachers and students! This is an introduction to Google Workspace for the teaching staff.

Random question for any teachers out there: I'm going to be delivering some training in a school that uses Google Education on getting the most out of their IT. I know how to use all the individual apps in a business context, but do you have any teacher/school specific tricks or tips you wish someone had told you about earlier? #teacher #teaching #classroom #google

@[email protected] @[email protected] I suppose I need to be more precise: I will draft important writing, and I prototype code all the time. But that's very emotionally different from actually doing it for real and then restarting (which is, of course, a stupid squishy brain matter distinction).

The realization moment when that happens unexpectedly is inexplicably agonizing compared to the amount of time lost; I know on at least one occasion I spent much longer trying to restore the corrupted backup than it would have taken to just redo the work! If I'm trying to get the effect on purpose, I just do my best and then ask my wife (who is significantly better eye for detail than I have) what needs work which inevitiably gives me more than enough incentive to burn the first attempt to the ground and make something better. This strategy works fantastically, except when I'm actually trying to make something for my wife when it works... less well.

@[email protected] @[email protected] I do this with code every so often, and on the one hand it feels such a waste and I hate it. And on the other hand, I then re-write the same thing in half the time and twice as well because I've already done the thing and now I know how I want to do it.

A traitorous part at the back of my brain sometimes tries to convince me that this is what "real" editing/refactoring looks like, and to write code/prose to a "good" quality I should always draft and then recreate. But that's a filthy lying part of my brain that lies, because that way lies nothing but #ADHD procrastination lock and perfectionism. I try and only let the little weasel out on things that actually need that level of polish.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Ah, apologies if that's the case. I'd read it as an example of something so obviously unreasonable that it would probably never happen, but re-reading you're likely correct.

I hate to reduce your faith in humanity further @[email protected], but I have watched a real human being in real life do exactly this. And even be surprised that the other meat eaters didn't back him up. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

TL;DR: if you're consistently extremely low on energy, especially if exercise comes with mental 'fog' or delayed feelings of being drained, do not follow medical advice to gradually increase exercise to rebuild capacity until you've read up on #ChronicFatigue and #PEM (post-exertional malaise).

This one hits quite close to home; Monbiot in the Guardian gives a searing but accurate look at how poor support for anyone with #ChronicFatague / #ME / #LongCovid is in the UK and Europe - which probably includes millions of people. Why do I know it's accurate? Because I've been out of work for well over 18 months myself suffering from the condition, and I have been given exactly the bad advice in the article and had exactly the same dismissal from doctors (apart from the sexism, but that's only because I was 'lucky' enough to be born male). I don't spend a huge amount of time in the opinion sections of newspapers, but sometimes things end up there because nobody actually talking about them as news.

Particularly annoying is they could have had the whole lot in about 30 seconds using, you know, git on the git repositories and in a better format for them as well.

Just finished an emergency shut down of my personal forgejo instance before the server ran out of disk space because, once more, "someone" decided that downloading a zip archive of every commit of every public repo with no rate limiting was a grand idea.

Exactly how I wanted to spend Saturday night...

The fun thing about running the same course more than once is that you get to see how differently the same ideas turn out based on questions asked, how quickly people work, delays from technical issues, skills growing...

So now we have multiple orcs and multiple corridors. Got a preference? #GameDev #VisualNovel #Play #Krita

Surfacing this to my main feed:

If you’re doing something that makes you angry at code, then you’re a Real Developer. End of story.

Andreea speaks truth. There is so much unsolicited advice, so much of it soaked in guilt.

Here's my unsolicated parenting advice, something that really helped me in my years of parenting a baby: replace ‘should’ with ‘can.’ Anything somebody tells you that you •should• do as a parent, take it as something you •can• do.

Suddenly all of this guilt-laden unwanted advice becomes a beautiful menu of choices available to you, things that worked for someone and that your can try if your want to.

@[email protected] My son has just gone to uni as a mostly sane human, and I endorse this message. All decent parenting advice is based on anecdote or the statistical mean, which means it may be helpful (oddly, especially if it is something that sounds counter intuitive) but your baby is not the baby from the anecdote nor a statistically average baby in every way so it may not be helpful even if it's generally really good advice.

@[email protected] @[email protected] My wife tried to convince my son he should answer calls on his mobile even if the number was unknown, and he looked at her as if she'd grown two heads. He's never once in his 18+ years alive received an important piece of information from an unknown phone number, and he's not expecting to start now.

I've mentioned Kardi a few times recently, and this is a solid intro mix of some of their recent songs from Mu:con. Unfortunately, the sound engineering isn't great compared to most of the stuff on their own channel.

So why I am sharing this particular video on the #fediverse? Because whoever's doing the marketing at Mu:con looked long and hard at their music, give up and listed them as: #Rock / #GenreFluid . I have never heard a better tag line for either Kardi or for sharing anything on the fediverse...

@[email protected] Makes sense, and I think I can run with that. I'm running an online course for teenagers on creating their own computer game assets (visual and audio) and I felt a hole in the last iteration was I didn't have a tool to suggest if they wanted to make their own music. Given I'll be covering Audacity (a bit) for doing their own sound effects and Foley work, I can easily add using it to record the browser audio output from Sonic Pi online. I think. I'll need to experiment for a moment first.

Having Sonic Pi available in the browser is such a game changer for this kind of thing, and I'm amazingly grateful for your long term work on it (and for how much the original release of Sonic Pi inspired my son to get into music composition as a hobby growing up) - if I had any money to send your way I'd absolutely be sending some over...

@[email protected] Random question: is there a few to output to a downloadable file (i.e. record a performance as at runs)? I can't see it, and I understand it isn't the main use case, but I thought I'd ask.
